Colorado, known as the Centennial State, has a rich history that is steeped in the stories of the people who have called this state home over the centuries. January 24th is no exception, as this day has seen a number of significant events that have shaped Colorado’s past and continue to influence its present and future.

  • In 1861, Colorado became the 38th state to join the United States. This event marked the official recognition of Colorado as a state and the beginning of its history as a part of the United States.
  • In 1887, the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad began service to Leadville, Colorado. This event marked the beginning of Leadville’s transformation from a small mining town to a major transportation hub and economic center.
  • In 1912, the Denver Art Museum opened its doors to the public for the first time. This event marked the beginning of the Denver Art Museum’s history as a major cultural institution and a center for the arts in Colorado.
  • In 1979, the United Airlines Flight 217 crashed into a residential area of Aurora, Colorado, killing all 25 passengers and crew on board. This tragic event marked one of the deadliest plane crashes in Colorado history.

These events, and many others, have shaped Colorado into the unique and diverse state it is today, and they continue to inspire and influence the state’s residents and visitors alike. January 24th, in particular, holds a special place in Colorado’s history, as it marks the day when the state officially became a part of the United States, the beginning of its transportation and economic development, the start of its cultural institutions and a tragic event that affected its people.
